Since its creation in Italy, pizza has passed through different transformations and variations to finally become in the dish that people all over the world know and love today. And that might not be all, because nowadays there are different types of pizza, with different ingredients and preparations. But also there are different types of pizza crust.

The type of pizza crust depends on how it´s prepared by the cook but as well how it´s cooked. One utensil will most likely determined the quality of the crust, and that is the baking stones. There are various types, like cordierite pizza baking stone, BBQ grill stone and stone for oven and grill.

So what are the main different types of crust? There are a number of ways to shape the dough that would form the crust of the pizza, them being thin and thick crusts.

Thin crust pizzas are slimmer in the center where the ingredients are placed: like the sauce, and cheese, and end up in a crunchy yet doughy edges. The key to achieve this is by gently stretching out the dough to the desired shape. The types of pizzas with thin crusts, normally don't have many toppings on them because they are not built to handle the weight. But if that is desired, the solution is add a little bit more of dough to the center of the pie to make it thicker.

On the other hand, thick crust, as the name suggests, is thick all the way through. This allows the pizza to handle the weight of the sauce and of various toppings. The crust normally can range from a 1/8 to 1/4 inch in thickness.

Something that makes this type of pizzas more interesting is when they rolled out the edges of the dough and puts extra sauce, cheese, and toppings, like sausages.

Like it was mentioned before, there are different supplies and equipment that will help achieve the perfect desired type of crust. For example there are the normal equipment like convection ovens, pizza cutters, pizza peels, and bulk spices. But the special supplies needed are baking stones, which guarantees the most even heat throughout the dough for a perfectly baked crust.

Normally the cordierite stones are the more high quality of this type of stone. This is said because of the material they are built from, which is considered as a great heat conductor. This is a great thing to have in kitchens at home, because it will prevent the dough from burning in some sections while other sections might not be cooked at all. To be able to cook a perfectly even pizza baking stones are a necessity.

So even though we named just a few of different types of pizza, be aware that there are more that we haven’t named. From a simple thin crust cheese pizza to a custom pizza pie, this type of dish is the perfect way to share a moment with friends and families.
